Labour Preparation

Recent studies in Europe conclude that acupuncture can significantly reduce the duration of first stage labour. Study participants were shown to have shorter first stage labour: from an average of 321 minutes for women not receiving treatment to 196 for those who were. 

Acupuncture is also effective at regulating and strengthening contractions in stalled labours, in instances of prolonged ruptured membranes and for reducing stress hormones known to inhibit labour progression. 

We recommend that women start receiving regular acupuncture treatments no later than week 36 to shorten labour, and facilitate a smoother birth. 

Overdue Labour

In cases where you are over the due date, acupuncture may help bring labour on. In European studies it was found that overdue pregnant women receiving acupuncture were far less likely to need oxytocin (15% down from 85%) to induce labour than those who were not.
